Gianluigi Buffon

23 Mei 2012

  • Squad No: 1
  • Position: Goalkeeper
  • Age: 34
  • Birth Date: Jan 28, 1978
  • Birth Place: Carrara, Italy
  • Height: 6' 3'' (1.91m)
  • Weight: 83 kg

Long regarded as the finest goalkeeper in the world, Buffon became the most expensive shot-stopper in history when he joined Juventus for £32.6 million in 2001. Since that record-breaking move the Italian has proved his considerable worth for both club and country, culminating in World Cup triumph in 2006.
After winning the 2001-02 and 2002-03 Scudetti in Turin, Buffon stayed loyal to Juventus after they were demoted to Serie B in the Italian match-fixing scandal and he was rewarded with an instant return to the top fight, which inspired the big keeper to sign an extension to his contract until 2012.
Buffon has won everything in the Italian game and was a major part of the Italy side that won the World Cup - enjoying a 453-minute scoreless streak and conceding just two goals (one an own goal and the other a penalty) during the tournament.
His personal accolades include the UEFA award for Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper. He was also named by Pele as one of the top 125 players in the game. The keeper was handed the honour of captaining his nation following Fabio Cannavaro's retirement in 2011.
Strengths: An agile, commanding shot-stopper who is hugely experienced at the highest level.
Weaknesses: Has been caught out a few times from crosses and age is catching with him so his mobility is not what it once was.
Career high: Winning the World Cup in 2006 with Italy.
Career low: Being demoted to Serie B with Juventus following the calciopoli scandal.
Style: Accomplished, commanding, a well respected keeper.
Quotes: "Gigi Buffon is in every way an original. His talent very quickly made him the No.1 with Italy, whilst his personality, which is never banal, is characterised by great bravery both in his statements to the press and as he comes out to smother the ball at the feet of onrushing players." Italian journalist Leo Turrini.
Trivia: Buffon hails from sporting stock as he is a nephew of keeping legend Lorenzo Buffon. His father Adriano was a weight lifter while his mother was a discus thrower.

Eden Hazard

  • Squad No: 26
  • Position: Midfielder/Attacking/Winger
  • Age: 21
  • Birth Date: Jan 7, 1991
  • Birth Place: La Louviere, Belgium
  • Height: 1.70m
  • Weight: 56 kg

Eden Hazard's rise over the past couple of years has been meteoric, with the Belgian starlet undergoing a remarkable transformation from precocious Lille youngster to Ligue 1 sensation and one of the most sought after players in Europe. The fleet-footed attacking midfielder/winger has drawn comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but perhaps the greatest compliment has been the willingness of the Belgian press to proclaim that Hazard has what it takes to fill the enormous boots left by the legendary Enzo Schifo.
Born into a footballing family, Hazard's youth career took in Belgian sides Royal Stade Brainois and Tubize before he settled at Lille as a 14-year-old in 2005. Two years later, and the teenage prodigy had made his debut in the French top flight, going on to make a handful of substitute appearances in the 2007-08 season. The following campaign was a real breakthrough year though, as he went from impact sub to first-team talisman in the space of a few months - with his sparkling performances earning him an international debut for Belgium and the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year Award.
The plaudits continued to roll in last season and Hazard was tied down to a new four-year contract with Lille in an attempt to stave off interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs. With five league goals and eight assists, Hazard became his side's creator-in-chief and his influential displays, coupled with Europa League goals against Genoa, Gent and a winner against Liverpool, saw his reputation continue to grow around the continent.
Hazard's start to the 2010-11 campaign was a troubled one as he was publicly criticised by Belgium national team coach Georges Leekens, who accused him of being lazy in training, and he was also dropped by Lille coach Rudi Garcia. He didn't start a league game for Lille until November but has now re-established himself as an integral member of the first-team, causing a number of Europe's big clubs to show an interest, with Arsenal thought to be leading the race for his signature.
Strengths: A defender's nightmare, Hazard can dribble at pace and, like Lionel Messi, he is 5ft 7in and has a low centre of gravity that helps him breeze past opposition players. He has an eye for the spectacular and has scored some memorable solo efforts.
Weaknesses: Hazard's work-rate has questioned by his club and national team bosses, so much so that Lille coach Rudi Garcia dropped him earlier this season in a bid to spark him back into life. His strike-rate is also somewhat erratic and while he creates plenty of goals for others, he must start to score more himself.
Career high: Becoming the first non-French player to win the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year Award in 2008-09, before achieving something that the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry never managed by winning it again in 2009-10.
Career low: Suffering penalty heartache at the hands of Spain in the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Football Championship . Hazard's Belgium were hosting the tournament but went crashing out in the semi-finals after losing a shootout to a Bojan Krkic-inspired Spain side.
Style: A fearless, explosive attacking midfielder who can change the game with a turn of pace or a dribble.
Quotes: "Eden is technically gifted and very fast. I would take him to Real Madrid with my eyes closed. He can become a great footballer, he is a star of the future." France legend Zinedine Zidane gives Hazard a ringing endorsement.
Trivia: Both of Hazard's parents, Thierry and Carine were both footballers in Belgium and his younger brother Thorgan is on the books of Lille's arch-rivals Lens.

Arjen Robben

  • Position: Midfielder/Winger
  • Birth Date: Jan 23, 1984
  • Birth Place: Bedum, Netherlands
  • Height: 6' 0'' (1.83m)
  • Weight: 165 lbs (75 kg)
  • Foot: Left

One of the first names on the team-sheet, when fit, Robben has the power and pace to devastate any defence.
The winger spent the early part of his career with Groningen and PSV Eindhoven but it was not until he signed for Premier League side Chelsea for £12 million in the summer of 2004 that he truly hit the European stage. After a delayed debut at the Bridge due to a broken metatarsal, Robben then burst into the English game to damaging effect with performances full of speed and skill. Sadly for Robben that first season in London was probably his best as a series of injuries limited his involvement in a side which would win two Premier League titles.

He left Chelsea in 2007 to join Real Madrid in a £24 million deal. The Dutchman's first season in La Liga was spectacular, with the Spanish press locked in debate over whether Robben or Barcelona adversary Lionel Messi was the best player in the league. Real Madrid would win the Primera Liga title ahead of Barca.

Robben became one of the surprise casualties of Florentino Perez's new galacticos era at the Bernabeu in the summer of 2009. Though the left-winger did not want to leave the club he had no choice and moved to Bundesliga club Bayern Munich, where he gained a new lease of life, leading the side to the title in his first season.

Strengths: Able to take on and beat defenders at the drop of a hat, Robben's ability to get to the byline and deliver in accurate crosses instils fear into any defence.

Weaknesses: For a player with such a direct and dangerous style, he perhaps does not control games as much as he should. His injury record is not good.

Career high: Proving his doubters wrong, Robben scored 16 goals in 18 starts to take Bayern to the Double in 2009-10.

Career low: Missing Chelsea's run to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2004-05 due to injury.

Style: Pacey, quick and creative, Robben is always a threat.

Quotes: "He confirmed his class. We should all be proud that he plays for us now. It's really tough to do what he did. Three days ago, he was a Madrid player. He came here a day ago, didn't know anyone bar his new coach and one or two team-mates and to perform like this. It's mindboggling." Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal, August 2009, after Robben scored twice on his debut.

Trivia: Robben is married to childhood sweetheart Bernadien Eillert.

Sergio Aguero

14 Mei 2012

  • Full Name: Sergio Leonel Agüero del Castillo
  • Nationality: Argentina
  • Date of birth: 2 June 1988
  • Country of birth: Argentina
  • Place of birth: Quilmes
  • Position: Attacker
  • Height:173 cm
  • Weight: 70 kg
  • Foot: Both

Profile:
One of the world's most highly-rated strikers, Aguero draws obvious comparisons with father-in-law Diego Maradona.

At the age of nine he joined Independiente, the team he always supported, after showing great promise in several small-town teams such as Loma Alegre and Los Primos. A few years later, but much earlier than expected, he would fulfil another dream: making his debut in the top division. He was 15 years, one month and three days old when Oscar Ruggeri, by then Independiente's coach, sent him on as a replacement for Emanuel Rivas with 21 minutes left in a game against San Lorenzo. Thus, Aguero broke Maradona's record and became the youngest footballer to play an official game in the Argentine top division. Even though seven months would go by before he would start a game with the team, Aguero had already showed great promise and appeared to be the new icon of Argentine football. By 2005, the offers from Europe started arriving and he was transferred to Atletico Madrid for around 23 million euros. Aguero has proved his class with consistent displays at Atletico since his arrival in Spain. His partnership with Uruguay's Diego Forlan has been dynamite for the capital city club, with his pace, power and finishing ability making him a real handful for any defender. However, his love affair with the club came to an end in June 2011 when he asked for a transfer and joined Manchester City the following month for a fee of around £39 million.

Strengths: His ball control and powerful bursts make him almost unstoppable in the box. A fine finisher went presented with a chance, he has a capacity to create in the most difficult circumstances.

Weaknesses: He sometimes lacks focus and can be selfish with the ball.

Career high: Helping Atletico to win the 2010 Europa League with two assists in the final.

Career low: Except on isolated occasions, he has not yet been able to shine with the national team.

Style: Direct, strong, cool-headed, a bull of a striker.

Quotes: ''Every era has its best soccer player and hopefully Aguero is the best of this. He is going through a very good time and when he has the ball at his feet there is the feeling that something will happen, and always good.' Does that sound like anyone familiar?'' Atletico president Enrique Cerezo, October 2008.

Trivia: A cumbia band called Los Leales recorded a song with Sergio Aguero as the lead singer. The song was written in his honour and is called "El Kun Aguero".

Iker Casillas

11 Mei 2012

Full Name: Iker Casillas Fernández
Squad No: 1
Position: Goalkeeper
Birth Date: May 20, 1981
Birth Place: Mostoles, Spain
Height: 6' 1'' (1.85m)
Weight: 84 kg
Foot: Left

Profile:
Captain of his country and a hero to millions of Madridistas, Casillas also has a strong claim to the title of the finest goalkeeper of his generation. The Real Madrid icon has won tournaments with his country at Under-15, U-17 and U-19 level, but his crowning glory was lifting the Euro 2008 and World Cup trophies in two stellar years.

Nicknamed San Iker ('Saint Iker') at Real Madrid, Casillas is a rare homegrown talent among a sea of galacticos having joined the club at the age of nine. He made his first-team debut under the current national coach, Vicente del Bosque, in the 1998-99 season and cemented his place the following year when becoming the youngest goalkeeper to appear in a Champions League final when beating Valencia just four days after his 19th birthday. A rare slump in form saw him dropped for the encounter with Bayer Leverkusen two years later but he appeared as a substitute in the second half in Glasgow and won the trophy for Real with a series of superb saves.

Casillas has been an established and respected member of the first XI ever since and has played a major role in Real's extensive success over the past decade - winning almost everything there is to win in the game.

He is Spain's most capped player, breaking the record held by the legendary Andoni Zubizarreta, and it will take some effort from his rivals for his position - the likes of Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina - to wrestle the national jersey off Casillas.

Strengths: As the last line of defence in a team that often pays scant regard to such an art, Casillas gets plenty of practice and frequently demonstrates his impressive reflexes, superb agility and innate ability to pull off a spectacular save. His forceful personality and will to win ensure he is a born leader.

Weaknesses: His aura of invincibility has been slightly dented due to a handful of mistakes and he can be slightly rash when rushing off his line.

Career high: Lifting the World Cup trophy at Soccer City in 2010.

Career low: A humbling experience at the Bernabeu last season when arch rivals Barcelona smashed six past Casillas in May in a game that effectively clinched the league title for the Catalans.

Style: Energetic, extravagant, commanding, a leader from the back.

Quotes: "Iker is the perfect captain. I'd give him ten out of ten for everything he does as a keeper, a captain and in the way he behaves. He sees everything so clearly. The whole squad deserve a ten but Casillas more than anyone. As the captain he's the one I speak to the most. He's a phenomenon." Luis Aragones, June 2008.

Didier Drogba

10 Mei 2012

Full name: Didier Yves Drogba Tébily
Nationality: Côte d'Ivoire
Date of birth: 11 March 1978
Country of birth: Côte d'Ivoire
Place of birth: Abidjan
Position: Attacker
Height: 189 cm
Weight: 91 kg
Foot: Right

Profile:
Undoubtedly one of the best centre forwards in the world, Drogba still manages to polarise opinion with his theatrical and temperamental style of play taking the shine off the powerful striker's incredible talent. Drogba moved from his native Ivory Coast to France in 1988, living with his uncle in order to pursue a career in football. He started his career at Dunkirk before moving to Abbeville, Levallois and Le Mans.
But it was after a move to Guingamp that he really began to catch the eye, netting 17 goals in their 2002-03 Ligue 1 campaign before signing for Marseille - where he scored 19 goals in 35 appearances during his one season there. Chelsea and Jose Mourinho then came knocking and smashed the British transfer record for a striker, paying £24 million for his services in 2004. Drogba scored 16 goals in each of the next two seasons, helping Chelsea win back-to-back Premier League titles, before starring in 2009-10 with 29 league goals to secure another title.
Injuries have hampered him as he moves into the later stage of his career, but when he has been on form, there are few defenders who can stop his devastating style. Drogba made his international debut in 2002 and is now the Elephants leading all-time goalscorer and appeared at two World Cup finals.

Strengths: Aerial prowess and power; there are few players in the world as strong.

Weaknesses: Temperament, propensity to dive and over-exaggerate tackles and confrontations.

Career High: Winning the 2006 African Footballer of the Year award after helping Chelsea to win a second successive Premier League title and captaining the Elephants to their maiden World Cup finals.

Career Low: Being sent-off in the Champions League final against Manchester United in 2008 after slapping Nemanja Vidic.

Style: Robust, bustling centre forward who harasses his markers. But he is excellent with the ball on the deck and a strong finisher with the ability to use both feet.

  • Country of birth : Germany
  • Place of birth : Memmingen, Germany
  • Position : Midfielder
  • Height : 176 cm
  • Weight : 64 kg
  • Foot : Both

Gotze made his name at Dortmund in 2009-10 when Shinji Kagawa was injured and emerged as one of the most talented young players in Europe.
Joining the Dortmund academy at the age of eight, he rose through the youth ranks and caught the eye of the international set-up, whom he represented from U-15 level up to his senior debut against Sweden in 2010.
Either on the flanks or through the centre, Gotze's creative talent quickly made him the star of the Dortmund side and he picked up his first title in his first full season in the side. Much more is expected of a player that Dortmund legend Matthias Sammer proclaimed as "one of the best talents that we've ever had"

Strengths: He has an ability to run at the opposition with pace and skill, which is helped by the fact he is naturally two-footed. Technically excellent and with a good eye for goal.

Weaknesses: Still learning the game, he occasionally picks the wrong pass and is not the biggest physically.

Career high: Winning the 2010-11 German Bundesliga title and scoring six goals in 29 starts and making 15 assists.

Career low: Forced to wait for his chance in the Dortmund first-team.

Style: Tricky, technical, fast; a potential phenomenon.

Quotes: "It is not possible to stop Mario Gotze. There is no one playing better than him. He runs through opponents as though they aren't there. He has the same assets as Lionel Messi in terms of his technique and understanding of the game. He is an instinctive footballer - just like Messi." German legend Franz Beckenbauer on Gotze.

Trivia: Gotze has the nickname 'Gotzinho' in the dressing room and lives at home with his parents.

Andrea Pirlo

7 Mei 2012

Date of Birth: May 19, 1979

Place of Birth: Brescia

Position: Centrocampista (AMF, DMF)

Height: 177.0 cm

Weight: 68.0 Kg

Serie A Debut: 21/05/1995, Reggiana - Brescia 2-0

Andrea Pirlo is a world class player, possessing dazzling feet and a phenomenal ability to read the game. He understands his team-mates and the rhythm of the play, knowing how and when oppose his authority if need be.

The playmaker has a strong shot, characterised by extreme precision, a term frequently attributed to his lethal free-kicks. Above all, it’s Pirlo’s complete coolness in moments that count - as far as he’s concerned there’s no difference between taking a penalty in training, or appearing in the World Cup final.

This is a common quality in leaders, a merit that could only be claimed by the authentic driving forces, players who are destined for glory.

The midfielder is a born leader. He began his football career with Brescia, making his Serie A debut at 16 years of age in the 1994/95 campaign. Pirlo became a playmaker and featured in that role at the Rigamonti, then with Reggina and Inter, before returning to Brescia in 2001.

In order to accommodate both Pirlo and Roberto Baggio in the same side, the former altered his position and became a midfield general, a role that would bring both him and Milan great success throughout ten consecutive seasons in red and white.

His career record is impressive: a Club World Cup Championship, two Champions League wins, two European Super Cups, two titles, one Italian Super Cup and one Coppa Italia. Internationally, he won the 2000 Under-21 European Championships and was the top scorer, a bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics and finally the 2006 World Cup in Berlin.

At Juventus he will be reunited with many team-mates who shared that fantastic adventure. Together they will contribute to write new pages of an extraordinary career.

David Silva

4 Mei 2012

Full name : David Josué Jiménez Silva

Date of birth : 8 January 1986

Place of birth : Arguineguín, Canary Islands, Spain

Height : 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in)

Playing position : Attacking midfielder

David Josué Jiménez Silva is a Spanish footballer who plays for Manchester City and the Spanish national team. Silva is capable of playing on the wing, as a traditional number 10, and sometimes as a supporting striker. A Spanish international since the age of 20 with over 50 caps, he was a member of the squads that won both the Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup.

He spent six years of his professional career with Valencia CF, appearing in more than 150 games and winning one Copa del Rey, before moving in 2010 to Manchester City.

Early life .
Silva was born in Arguineguín, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, to Fernando Jiménez, a former municipal police officer who eventually was responsible for the safety of the Valencia CF stadium, and Eva Silva. His father, Fernando, is Canarian while his mother, Eva, is of Japanese descent, confirmed in an interview by his family members to the Canarian media. Silva has two younger siblings, sister Natalia and brother Nando. He is commonly called by the nickname Chino (Spanish for "Chinese") due to his physical appearance.
Silva began playing football in the youth team of UD San Fernando, near Maspalomas. Originally, he played as a goalkeeper, before becoming a winger and mirrored his game around his footballing idol as a youth, Michael Laudrup. When he was 14, he received an offer to become a youth player at Valencia CF, which he accepted. He stayed in Valencia's youth set-up until he was 17.

International career
Silva first represented Spain in the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Finland, scoring three goals. In 2006, he became an under-21 international and scored four goals during the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship; this was enough to earn him joint-fourth place in the goal ranking, alongside Italian strikerGraziano Pellè.
Silva made his senior international debut in the 1–0 friendly home defeat to Romania on 15 November 2006, and continued to receive call-ups to the side after good contributions in his first games. On 22 August 2007, he scored his first two goals for Spain, netting twice in a 3–2 friendly win versus Greece, and was then called-up to the squad of 23 for UEFA Euro 2008.
In the semi-finals game versus Russia, Silva scored the third goal for Spain after a quick counter-attack in which Cesc Fàbregas delivered a low cross, and he sent the ball into Igor Akinfeev's goal with his left foot. In the final, he was involved in an incident with Germany's Lukas Podolski. After he pulled Podolski to the ground, the German approached Silva, which resulted in an angry exchange of words and a coming together of heads that the referee decided not to punish. Shortly afterward, Spanish coach Luis Aragonés substituted Silva for Santi Cazorla in an attempt to calm the tensions.
After appearing regularly during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification stages – Spain won all ten fixtures – Silva was also picked for the squad for the finals in South Africa. His participation would be, however, a small one, as the national team won the tournament: he started in the first match, a 0–1 group stage defeat against Switzerland, then played the last four minutes of the 1–0 win against Germany in the semi-finals.
On 11 August 2010, during an international friendly with Mexico, Silva scored two minutes into second-half injury time, ending the game with a 1–1 draw
In a Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein on 3 September 2010, Silva scored after 62 minutes, in a 4–0 away win. The following month, in the same competition, he scored through a rare header, as the national team downed Lithuania in Salamanca (3–1).

In Spain's first match for 2011, a friendly against Colombia on February 9, he came off the bench to score the game's only goal with just four minutes remaining, helping Spain to a hard-fought 1-0 win. He scored twice and provided one assist in Spain's 3-1 victory against Scotland in their final match of the Euro 2012 qualifiers. The win saw the Spaniards enter the tournament with a perfect qualifying record by winning all their group games. He scored the first goal in Spain's 2-2 comeback against Costa Rica, a friendly match where he came on as a substitute in the second half with Spain trailing 2-0. He once again scored in Spain's first friendly of 2012 against Venezuela to make the score 2–0 in a match that ended in a 5–0 win.

Xavi Hernández Profil

2 Mei 2012

  • Full Name: Xavier Hernández Creus
  • Playing position: Midfielder
  • Number: 6
  • Place of birth: Terrassa (Barcelona), Spain
  • Date of birth: 1980/01/25
  • Weight: 68 kg
  • Height: 170 cm

Personal biography

Xavi has spent all his footballing life at the Nou Camp, having joined Barcelona when he was only 11 years old. The progress he made was always very quick and in season 97-98 he moved up from youth team to Barca B.
In Barça B, he became the brains of Jordi Gonzalvo's team which won promotion to the second division.
Xavi's dream of making his official debut with the first team squad became true when he played in the Spanish Super Cup against Majorca in the summer of 1998. He was in the starting line up and scored: a better debut he could not have asked for. Xavi also played an important role in the league-winning season of 1998-99 with Van Gaal as manager, most notably with an important goal in the Nuevo Zorrilla, which turned round the team's fortunes.

Season 1999-2000 was a good one for Xavi as due to the injury to Guardiola he was the first choice number 4 for a large part of the season. After the legendry captain left for Italian football he became the playmaker of the team and has continued to demonstrate the full range of his talents in this position.

With Van Gaal, Rexach, Antic, Rijkaard and Guardiola in charge of the team, Xavi has always been a key member of the team - a fact made clear by the 300 official games he completed whilst still only 25 years old.
With Rijkaard, Xavi has shown that he can not only play at the heart of midfield, but is also more than able to cover any position in the center of the team, an ability reflected in the fact that he was the most used player in the League winning 2004-05 season, playing 36 games in all.

Xavi will never forget 2 December 2005. While training at La Masía, the midfielder tore the ligaments in his left knee. His recovery was swifter than expected and within five months he was playing again. On 29 April 2006 against Cadiz, Xavi once again "felt like a footballer ". He was back in time to celebrate the League and Champions League titles with his team-mates.
In the last two seasons with Frank Rijkaard in the dugout, Xavi was one of the players most used by the Dutch manager. Plus in the 2007-08 season he set a personal best of 7 League goals, almost doubling his previous highest of four in the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons.

In Guardiola's first year, Xavi Hernández extended his goalscoring record. He beat his personal best, getting 10 in 54 games. Along with Iniesta, he formed part of the central playmaking duo that contributed so much to the treble winning season. Xavi led the side that won the 2009-10 league title with an historic 99 points.

During the 2010/11 season, the midfielder recorded a new record which he continues to stretch as the Club's leading appearance maker. On January 2nd 2011, Xavi equalled Migueli's record of 549 appearances when he played in the 2-1 win over Llevant at the Stadium. On winning the league in 2010/11, Xavi equalled the record of six league titles for Barça previously shared by Ramallets and Guardiola.
In addition Xavi Hernández has also been a fixture in Spain's national side. He played in the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups and in the 2004 and 2008 European Championships, and in the latter was chosen as best player as Spain picked up the title.

His World Cup winner's medal in 2010 completes a truly astounding list of honours. Xavi was the undisputed playmaker par excellence and the best passer of the competition.
