Wilshere ruled out of Euros

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said star midfielder Jack Wilshere will play no part at Euro 2012.

The 20-year-old playmaker, who has not made an appearance for Arsenal this season, suffered a recurrence of his ankle injury in January and will not recover in time to represent England at the tournament.

"Jack Wilshere will not play again this season and will not go to the Euros, that's for sure," the Frenchman told reporters after his side's 2-1 defeat to Premier League strugglers Wigan on Monday.

"He is devastated. But you can understand, because what kept him going until now is that he still felt that he'd have a chance to go to the Euros."

Wilshere refused to be downhearted after the news and wished his team-mates the best of luck on Twitter.

"I hope England can do well and bring home the cup! I will be watching and cheering the boys on like a proper England fan!" he wrote.

"Thanks for all your support! Means a lot!"

Wenger said he would not be happy if the youngster was rushed back into action to represent Team GB in the London Olympic Games throughout July and August.

"The Olympics would be the worst idea for him," Wenger said.

"It's just because when a guy has not played for a year, he needs a good preparation and a slow preparation after to start the season.

"Once he's fit, he can think about the national team as well.

"At the moment, it's not that I do not want him to go to the Olympics, but I think at the moment he has other priorities."
